Green Cat Hydrogen (GCH), a UK-based developer of green hydrogen projects, has had three projects shortlisted for the UK government’s Hydrogen Production Business Model Second Hydrogen Allocation Round (HAR2).
Green Cat Hydrogen’s three hydrogen facility projects at Creca, Dumfries and Galloway; Binn Ecopark, Perthshire; and Strathallan, Perthshire have been shortlisted as part of the funding round. These project(s) represent a total capacity of 70 MW, with the potential to save over 40,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
The funding will enable GCH to be a key driver of practical, real-world solutions for the production of green hydrogen, helping to accelerate decarbonisation across a range of industries and geographies.
GCH’s distributed approach offers the potential for the benefits of renewable energy to be felt across the UK, reaching diverse communities from rural and island locations to hard-to-electrify industrial clusters and processes, while creating resilient local supply chains and high-value jobs.
By harnessing renewable energy that might otherwise go unused, green hydrogen production can maximise the value of the UK’s clean energy resources and support long-term energy security.
HAR2 funding will also support projects across the UK to create new, skilled job opportunities, through the construction, delivery and operation of green hydrogen production facilities.
As many important industries contend with the challenges of the energy transition, this government investment will help to futureproof traditionally carbon-intensive sectors across the UK. A reliable supply of green hydrogen will help protect existing jobs, and create new opportunities as innovative technologies and processes are brought online.
Dr Gavin Catto, Chief Executive Officer at Green Cat Hydrogen, said: “This shortlisting represents a huge milestone for both the nation’s rapidly growing hydrogen industry, and Green Cat Hydrogen (GCH) as a dynamic, engineering-led team. It recognises both the highly investible nature of the domestic hydrogen sector and GCH’s commitment to supporting Scotland and the wider UK’s role as a leader in the green hydrogen space.
“At an exciting time for the nation’s hydrogen sector, this funding has the potential to support GCH’s ambitions for growth, and our determination to contribute to the UK’s greener energy transition.”
About HAR2
After market engagement and consulting with the industry, HAR2 aims to assist with the deployment of up to 875MW of UK low carbon hydrogen production capacity by the end of 2025, adding to the 125MW of support offered by HAR1. This funding round represents a significant step for the UK government in its aim of achieving 1GW of electrolytic hydrogen production projects in operation or construction by 2025.
